Jack Nicklaus Career Accomplishments:
Whenever there is a discussion about the greatest golfer of all time, Jack Nicklaus is the benchmark against which all others are measured. Nicknamed the Golden Bear, Nicklaus was the perfect combination of spectacular talent, disciplined precision, and fierce competitiveness. In 1960, at age 20, Nicklaus entered the U.S. Open and finished second by two strokes, having posted the lowest score ever by an amateur. Two years later, as a pro, Nicklaus beat Arnold Palmer in a final-round playoff to become the youngest-ever winner of the U.S. Open. His battles in the Open and in the Masters with the more free-wheeling but equally tenacious Palmer are the stuff of legend. Their rivalry helped turn golf into a major spectator sport. Nicklaus’ tally of 18 Major titles remains unequalled, as does his total of six victories in the Masters. Jack Nicklaus, who was still winning Major tournaments at age 42, retired from PGA competition in 2005.
