His battles in the Open and in the Masters with the more free-wheeling but equally tenacious Palmer are the stuff of legend. Their rivalry helped turn golf into a major spectator sport. Nicklaus’ tally of 18 Major titles remains unequalled, as does his total of six victories in the Masters. Jack Nicklaus, who was still winning Major tournaments at age 42, retired from PGA competition in 2005.
